Captain’s Log: June 2, 2024

Day 29 of our current adventure brings us back to the start at West End, Tortola in the BVIs. Waking up in Soper’s Hole after a month of covering a good portion of the Caribbean feels amazing. The Somewhere Hot is home. Yesterday, we spent close to ten hours crossing over from St. Martin and were rewarded with a homemade meal of Guyanese food. Nothing ever tasted so good.

The past month took us to St. Martin, St. Barts, St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Guadeloupe, The Saints, Dominica, and a few little spots in between. The reputation of the Somewhere Hot as a loud and lively neighbor in an anchorage has now spread wider. Sorry if you were moored up next to us.

Someone once said that travel is the only education. I love seeing new places, trying new food, experiencing different cultures, and learning new languages; however, it is the widening of perspective and expanding of horizons that produces the ultimate benefit. Traveling by boat also provides plenty of time to think because looking at your phone during a crossing is inadvisable.

My recollection of specific days is a bit hazy, but a few highlights and memorable moments stand out. Waterfalls, old forts, a full moon, the Southern Cross, the green flash, SCUBA diving, catching and eating a big tuna, partying on St. Barts, driving on the left, speaking French, shopping for the perfect coffee maker, getting lost on Guadeloupe, Alexander Hamilton’s childhood home, silent karaoke, mimosas at dinner, a marriage proposal, plenty of boat drinks, bad sunburns, worse tan lines, and that one time we got ice cream on Antigua and went back for seconds.

Of course, it is the people who populate the pages of this journal that made the trip extra special. I spent quality time with old friends and made some new ones as well. The memories will last a lifetime, or at least until we do it all over again. Pushing further next time. St. Lucia in 2025!
