See Life
At sea level, a person of average height can see almost three miles to the horizon. It is just after 6:00 am and we are sitting on the top step of the Grand Palapa at Royal Belize drinking coffee, which puts eye level at just about that height. The horizon to the east is a straight line, only broken by the outline of the Twin Cayes.
I know what is beyond that horizon.
I have been there.
It calls me to return.
The ocean is dead calm, the sky is brightening, and the boat is anchored just off the island. We are making a mental list of all the things we need to spend a couple of days diving out at Glover’s. It is an easy fifteen-mile run. We can fish on the way there and back. What do we really need? Dive gear. Check. Fishing gear. Check. Coffee, beer, water, sandwiches. Check. Oh, and someone should create the perfect playlist. This is going to be awesome.
Glover’s Atoll was named after a couple of pirate brothers in the 1750s. (Oh, don’t forget the rum.) It harbors one of the greatest diversity of reef types in the western Caribbean. There are 850 patch reefs on the interior and spectacular underwater formations around the 30+ mile perimeter of the atoll. There are more shades of blue than you can name. And we know we are going to have it all to ourselves. It is calling us.
Pack it up. Let’s go see life.
