The Ranger Creed
Legendary Texas Ranger Captain Bill McDonald coined the Ranger’s creed when he said, "No man in the wrong can stand up against a fellow that's in the right and keeps on a-comin'."
This concept of justice has served me well throughout my career. It embodies the profound principles of resilience, righteousness, and determination. If you are in business long enough you are likely going to end up in a dispute. You may unintentionally encounter some shady and unscrupulous characters along the way. The way you respond when someone attempts to take advantage of you defines your character and accrues to your professional reputation.
Being on the right side of an argument is critical, but often insufficient. You’ve got to “keep on a-comin’” if you want to persevere in a fight. This might mean digging in for a long-term legal battle, pursuing a social justice objective, trying to save your country, or just fighting for something you truly believe in. There will be obstacles and challenges to overcome, but the Texas Ranger’s creed is a motivational force.
It’s always best to avoid conflict if you can. We don’t go looking for trouble, but if you want some, we’ll happily oblige – and we will “keep on a-comin’.” Perseverance, rooted in truth and justice, is a formidable force. Captain McDonald has shown us the way.
